Dragons and villains
Dragon Rising takes place in the First World War. Set in Romania and London, it centres on a German plot to take over the world, using a terrifying secret weapon. The second book in the same series, Riding the Dragon, is a supernatural tale of kidnapping and treachery. It also involves pilot Austin Endicott and his friend, soldier and journalist, Harry Hawkins. Aleister Crowley and Tom Driberg MP make an appearance.

The Chosen is an autobiographical time travel book, spanning 200 years, from 1858 to 2058, a period in which the world is transformed into a utopia. The Fourth way is a political crime thriller. We're in London in 2004. A journalist on a trade magazine stumbles into the biggest story of his life. The tale that unfolds involves a murderous and ambitious minister in Tony Blair's New Labour government.

Social history
Rural Drives was sponsored by a journalist's bursary from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. An update of William Cobbett's Rural Drives, the book is a journey through England in the summer of 1998 and a critique of housing and social policy. The Stuff of Life, which I co-edited, shows the food that ordinary people ate, the unhealthy conditions in which they lived and the horrific dangers they faced at work in Edwardian Britain.

In 2012, the year of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, I was asked to write a history of the last 60 years of my employer, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. The book was assembled using archive pictures and the reminiscences of members. It describes a period in which the skies were cleared of smoke, the slums were demolished and the nation's food was made safer and more varied. And it shows the work of a group of public servants whose labours are rarely acknowledged.

Wild about London is a book of illustrated poems about some of the creatures that live in London. They include the (too) friendly pigeon, a famous squirrel thief, a magpie who joined the police, bats who objected to being on reality TV and a blackbird whose tragic life story and beautiful singing voice led to stunning success on a Saturday night talent show.
This publishing project, produced with my talented artist friend Tim Sanders, was successfully crowd-funded on the Kickstarter website. To purchase please go to my Product page. Thanks.
