Print and digital journalism It's been fun writing for magazines over the years. Titles I have contributed to as a freelance include The Guardian and the Observer magazine, New Society, New Statesman and lots of specialised publications. Clients in 2018 include BASF's magazine, Creating Chemistry, Food Alert (as a blogger), the Journal of Trading Standards, Materials Recycling World, Environment Analyst and Inside Housing.
News stories As a spin-off from my book on housing policy, Rural Drives, I wrote a news story for The Guardian, about murky goings on in Walsall in the West Midlands.
Features The feature is long form – less formulaic than a news story. It could be about an issue, it could be the portrait of a place, or an interview with a secretary of state, or a company profile.
Opinion It helps if you have a detailed knowledge of your topic and you feel strongly about it. I've written opinion articles and blogs on a wide range of subjects, including benefits and poverty, housing, food policy, public health, Brexit. Lots. And hundreds of editorials.
